“It is a period of civil war. Rebel spaceships, striking from a hidden base, have won their first victory against the evil Galactic Empire. During the battle, Rebel spies managed to steal secret plans to the Empire's ultimate weapon, the DEATH STAR, an armored space station with enough power to destroy an entire planet.”
Just like that the space epic we all know and love began. We then followed our heroes: a farm boy, a princess, and a space pirate as they sailed into high adventure on an ocean of stars. While the Original Trilogy’s heroes journeyed is being continued in The Force Awakens and future installments of the saga, we have to realize that none of this would be possible without the determination and sacrifice of a few good soldiers. That’s where Rogue One comes in.
The first movie in a series of stand alone stories looks to explore the unsung heroes of the Rebellion in their plight to obtain those coveted Death Star plans that place Luke, Leia, and Han on a journey that will ultimately change the fate of the galaxy. According to various sources, Rogue One will be a stark difference in tone as compared to the earlier films. Perhaps the official plot summary from StarWars.com offers the most intriguing possibilities:
“A rogue band of resistance fighters unite to steal the Death Star plans and bring new hope to the galaxy. "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" takes place before the events of "Star Wars: A New Hope" and will be a departure from the saga films but have elements that are familiar to the Star Wars universe, exploring the galactic struggle from a ground-war perspective while maintaining that essential Star Wars feel that fans have come to know.”
Several online sources have theorized that the heist aspect and ensemble cast offers a valid reason to believe in an Ocean’s Eleven style of film. What resonates the most with me from the official plot summary is the phrase: “exploring the galactic struggle from a ground-war perspective”. That alone gives me chills. Imagine an epic war film the likes of Saving Private Ryan or Platoon. Now, imagine an epic war film with x-wings and stormtroopers. Did you just grin a little? I do each time I think about it.
We know that Rogue One will lead us back to where we began in Episode IV, but you probably also know this old saying: It’s not the destination that defines us, but rather the journey. The journey of Rebel spies stealing the plans to the dreaded Death Star will hark back to an era that many feel is too far gone. Original Trilogy fans are sure to be invested in the production and release of Rogue One as this will be the final test to see if Star Wars is really in the right hands at Disney. I for one feel confident that Lucasfilm will deliver like never before in what is set to be the most anticipated film of 2016.
Check back next Monday for Part 2 of this continuing look at Rogue One. In the meantime check out the teaser for Rogue One below...
