Rogue One: The Recon Continues...
In an ever interesting recon mission to track down details relating to the Upcoming release of Rogue One; A Star Wars story, we’ve uncovered a few gems among the piles of speculated information that may be of some importance to you. But BE WARNED…SPOILERS LIE AHEAD. So, if you are one of those fans who like to be surprised, you should STOP READING NOW……….
Well, there it is…your chance to keep your Rogue One virginity is gone. Apparently, you’re a fan who likes to live life dangerously…so…read on. We’ll take this step by step in order to make things fairly easy to understand and simple to follow.
Ben Mendelsohn is apparently cast in the film as some sort of an Imperial badass who commands great respect (or fear?) from the troops. A recent report on SlashFilm offers the following information about this character.
“There is a bad guy or person of some importance to the Empire. His main feature is a huge majestic white cape with a slit in the back. In the film there is a beautiful shot of this Imperial treading through a shallow body of water with said cape trailing him. The figure that wears it appears to be an older male. I’m told he has a badass sidearm and a really cool name. We’re fairly certain this is Ben Mendelsohn’s character but that’s not 100% or verified at this time…there are shots of this character walking through legions of Stormtroopers, so he’s obvious some kind of Big Deal to the Empire. We’re officially intrigued…”
That’s a good enough description to get those fanboy juices flowing, huh? I know…i know…I’m getting a little excited myself. Let’s just calm down and get some more info. Alrighty then?
Forest Whitaker’s character is apparently sympathetic to the Rebellion. Whether he is an actual member of the Rebel Alliance remains to be seen. As reported by SlashFilm, he is described as a battle hardened combat veteran who walks with a cane/crutch due to having a prosthetic leg. With possible ties to the criminal underworld, this character is could be a bounty hunter or some other sort of grizzled type of character who can handle himself well in dangerous circumstances. Whitaker has always been an excellent character actor who can pretty much find himself suitable for many roles. Personally, I’m very interested to see how his character plays out in the grand scope of this story.
Possibly the greatest bit of info that I’ve been able to scrounge up is the RETURN of James Earl Jones as the voice of Darth Vader. Not only does this throwback to the time of the Original Trilogy films, but it adds a solidarity to the film that can’t be replicated. Albeit nostalgic in nature, having the actual voice of Vader be the original as performed by Jones is amazing. The little kid in me definitely took over with an acute case of drop jaw when I read about this.
While we’re on the subject of Darth Vader, let’s just rehash some of the info that’s already been put out there about him. Reports have stated several different things about how our favorite Dark Lord of the Sith would be portrayed in the film. Reports from Making Star Wars and the online version of Maxim had this to say about Darth Vader’s portrayal in Rogue One.
“Most of the rumors have him as a prominent player in a few scenes and something to fear for the heroes…The action sequences filmed are unknown, but there was work pitching the different ways Darth Vader could kill rebels on a battlefield with the Force and his lightsaber. The storyboard “pitches” showed decapitated rebels, people being dismembered by Vader throwing his sword, levitating bodies to make human shields, and so on. The art was more violent than what we’ve seen Darth Vader do on screen before.”
So does this mean that good old Darth will actually get some major screen time or will they relegate him to small specific scenes in order to make way for a newer crop of villains? I’d love to see him get a bit medieval on some rebels. There’s nothing wrong with showing the true gruesomeness of the dark side on screen. It would add a statement of realism on how brutal Vader really is. Given the fact that this movie is slated to be grittier and more warlike than the other Star Wars films, I think this would fit the mold perfectly. However, more info from the Maxim article suggests the following.
“He will not be the main antagonist but he will be working behind the scenes, pulling strings and will appear onscreen…he’ll be showing up via viewscreen or holo projection or something…”
So, at this point we really DON”T know. Given the info that we have so far, it’s only making us a bit more hungry to see this movie and find out for ourselves.
SECRET CODENAMES & STUFF
Well, most everyone knows that the working title of Rogue One is ‘Los Alamos”. That’s not a big secret. They’ve also been doing some filming out in the desert areas of the Southwestern Untied States Some reports say the Yuma, Arizona area has been the site of one filming location. But some new info came to light in a recent update regarding the Force Friday toy launch slated for September 30, 2016.
Rogue One black series figures are scheduled to launch on that day. Several figures are in production and have super secret codenames in order to decrease the chances of any spoilers. The info we have comes from SlashFilm and is reported as follows…
“Felicity Jones’ character is codenamed Green Seal Leader by the production. Seal Communicator Blue is Jiang Wen’s character (the guy with the red armor on behind Donnie Yen in the cast photo). Eel Commander is Forest Whitaker’s character. Seal Droid is Alan Tudyk’s character. The bad guys have codenames related to sharks. The factions when coded amount to seals, eels, and sharks. If “Seal” is the codename for Rebel soldier characters, then this essentially confirms that rumors that Alan Tudyk’s mo-cap character is a battle droid of some kind, which just sounds great. And does this mean that the “Shark Trooper” figure may represent Ben Mendelsohn‘s mysterious villain?”
Not only does the talk of secret codenames make you feel supercool for being a Star Wars fan, it just adds a bit more drama to the whole production. Being in the know with a few small things like this only heightens the sense of being part of some thing special. It’s awesome...
Thank you LEGO, we like your presentation…
Carefully planned releases or actual slip ups also point us in the direction of further info regarding the relationships between toy launches and pertinent info for the Rogue One film. A report from TechTimes shows imagery from the Nuremberg Toy Fair that advertises a starship for the upcoming LEGO release associated with Rogue One. What kind of starship is in the picture? Well, let’s just say that it looks like Slave-1. Very much like it.
“At a presentation during the Nuremburg Toy Fair, LEGO seems have let slip that a certain bounty hunter might be in Rogue One. When it comes to bounty hunters in the Star Wars universe, none are more iconic than Boba Fett, and the image used for Rogue One in LEGO's upcoming product presentation clearly shows the bounty hunter's equally iconic Slave I ship.”
Is it Slave-1? Well…we don’t know. I don’t think there is any solid info out there on this yet. But given the fact that Boba Fett is scheduled to have his own standalone film coming up in the future…it’s not too farfetched to think that we may see some sort of cameo appearance in this film. How cool would that be? As much as I’d like to share some more info, that about wraps things up for now. When we hear something, you’ll hear something.
